Bula McGraw

Bula Proffitt McGraw, born on June 21, 1946, in the serene hills of Madison County, North Carolina, passed away in Hendersonville, North Carolina, on June 28, 2025, at the age of 79. Bula was a steadfast and devoted individual, whose presence brightened the lives she touched. She dedicated over 30 years of her life to General Electric, where her work ethic and dedication shone brightly, culminating in her retirement in 2001.

Her life was enriched by a variety of passions that spoke to her creativity and love for beauty. She found joy in reading and creating beautiful floral arrangements of all styles, knitting intricate patterns, and painting vivid images that reflected her vibrant spirit. Music, particularly Gospel, held a special place in her heart; she lent her harmonious voice to the church choir at Upward Christian Fellowship in Flat Rock, where her faith and community were deeply intertwined.

Bula was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Sidney David McGraw, Jr.; her father, Jack Proffitt; and her brothers, Lonnie Jack Proffitt, Doug Proffitt, and Terry Proffitt. The love and memories she shared with them remain cherished by all who knew her. She is survived and lovingly remembered by her mother, Linda Metcalf Proffitt; her daughter, Melissa Shwahna and her husband, Sam; her son, Michael David McGraw; her grandchildren, Alexander “Alex” Shwahna and his wife, Shannon Marie, Adam Shwahna, and Andrew McGraw; her great-granddaughter, Juliette Shwahna; and her siblings, Myra Proffitt Ball, Randy Proffitt, Michael Proffitt, Teresa Jane Buckner and her husband, Von, and Gary Proffitt and his wife, Connie. Her legacy continues through her cherished nieces and nephews: Pressley Ball, Tony Ball, Angela Ramsey, Ricky Proffitt, Steven Proffitt, Scottie Proffitt, Terry Lynn Proffitt, Jr., Adam Proffitt, Jeremy Proffitt, Christy Anders, Doug Proffitt, Tiffany Duvall, Noah Proffitt, and Reagan Proffitt.

Bula was devoted to her family and cherished spending time with them. She was proud of her grandson Alexander “Alex,” when he graduated from Western Carolina University with his doctorate in Physical Therapy. Alex was the first doctor in the family and she would share with everyone who would listen just how pleased and proud she was of all that he had worked so hard for and accomplished. Previously, due to unexpected events, Bula missed seeing Alex graduated from UNC Asheville with his associate degree. She was so upset about this that Bula did not want anyone other than her daughter, Melissa to drive her to see him receive his doctorate from Western Carolina. She was determined to see him graduate. Additionally, Bula’s grandson, Adam is also following in his brother, Alex’s footsteps. He is currently enrolled in college studying Physical Therapy working towards his doctorate.

A Memorial Service celebrating Bula’s remarkable life will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, July 6, 2025, in the Chapel of Forest Lawn Funeral Home with Reverend Ken Parker and Chaplain Steve Newton officiating. Family and friends are invited to gather an hour prior to the service at 2:00 pm to share memories and offer condolences. A graveside service will follow immediately in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Bula Proffitt McGraw’s legacy of love, resilience, and creativity will continue to inspire all those who were fortunate enough to have known her. She leaves behind a tapestry of cherished memories and an unyielding spirit that will be fondly remembered by her family and friends. Forest Lawn Funeral Home has the honor of serving the family.
